When it comes to sleep styles, experts have long slapped two labels on people: early birds who rise with the sun and experience a morning energy surge, and night owls who sleep in and hit their stride later in the day. But if you never felt that either label describes you accurately, you’re not a sleep misfit. A new study to be published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences found that there are actually four sleep archetypes, and you may fall into one of the new categories.
Curious about whether early birds and night owls could be further divided into different subgroups, a team of Russian researchers designed a study. They had 130 male and female subjects keep track of their sleep-wake habits for a week, then spend 24 hours awake in a sleep lab filling out questionnaires to measure their alertness. Afterward, researchers determined that even though about half the subjects fell into the early bird or night owl categories, 25 people were energetic in both the morning and evening, while 32 people reported feeling relatively tired all day long………
